From the Eyes of a Coach in the SCT Finals — John Truhan

Saturday morning (2/23) Game Day! I drive to Dunkin Donuts to get my first of 3 Large Coffees and a Hot caramel Latte, for my wife Kim, that I leave at the side of the bed at 7:15 a.m. I kiss my daughter Kristi, who is six years old and my son john-John who is three, on their cheeks softly not to wake them and I go to meet my staff at another Dunkin Donuts for coffee number 2, this time, 50 minutes away from home, in Colts Neck. The word Danella has been said at least 50 times and I find myself not speaking enough about Colts neck. “If we are too concerned about stopping one player, we will find ourselves in the same position as SJV was Tuesday night! Let’s attack them!” (Which seems ironic for Colts neck to attack RBC in anything.)

My assistant and Father-figure, Charles Dinkjian is nervous. He is driving me and Bryan Parks crazy, so as usual we bust on him. It works…He leaves early! Bryan and I head to CNHS at 9:00 am. The players are strolling in and I can feel the excitement in their eyes. We practice until 10:45 am and I swear Brooke didn’t miss a shot! She has a look that coaches dream of seeing the day of the biggest game of their lives!

As I drive home, I am still surprisingly calm. I guess a Triple Overtime win in the Semi-Finals against Rumson will do that to a coach. (I felt like I gave birth that night!) As pink Floyd’s “Animals” is playing, I recall conversations I had with three tremendous coaches the night before. The first being Jeff Jasper,

Valley; arguably the best coach in the state. The second being Nick Russo, who is the former SJV coach and probably the best coach the shore conference has ever seen. And the third being Ray Cervino, who is the former TRN coach, again one of the best but definitely the most passionate and caring coach I have ever encountered. All three of these men said the same thing to me…A) HAVE FUN! B) Why the heck are you asking me!? I smile to myself and feel confident and calm! I receive well wishes from two close friends as I approach home (Brian Nash, Marlboro Head Coach and Joe Roman, St. Rose Head Coach).

I am greeted at the door by Kristi and John-John, the game is not on my mind anymore. I look over at my wife, Kim, and she is pacing! She says, “How come you are not nervous? I have to do something, I am going to buy flowers for all of the girls because they deserve it, win or lose!” Off she goes, I play with the kids, have lunch, and grab a nap while we are watching Plankton try to steal the Krabby Patty Formula again on “Spongebob Squarepants”. This must have been a sign because I am not that much taller than Plankton and the Parochial Schools have had the S.C.T title (Formula) since 1989. “Wouldn’t it be cool if Plankton got the formula?” I asked John-John. He said “YES”. I looked at Kristi and said “maybe he will get it tonight”. Kristi said “Daddy you have a game!” I said, “EXACTLY!”

I put John-John down for a nap, kiss Kristi and Kim goodbye and I am off to…..Dunkin Donuts for coffee #3! I arrive at the

Center and I am talking to Joe Montano before the game, we exchange pleasantries and I go to our bench. At the 17 minute mark we all go to the locker room. There is an aura of confidence we ALL have the look Brooke had at practice this morning! I step on Lauren and Tiffany’s backs (pregame ritual) and we leave the locker room.

The arena is packed!! Unchartered waters seem very deep until I see Kristi and John-John, I give each of them a hug and place them on my lap during warm-ups….I am calm. The game begins and we show everyone we belong! Two of the best players in the state (BROOKE and LAUREN) are making plays, Tiffany is sweating more than Patrick Ewing, Brittany is anxious/nervous and is grabbing every rebound; Vacc, Crystal, and Leeann’s hands and legs are shaking uncontrollably, and the most underrated player in the Shore, Emily Laurence, has this “killer look” that reminds me to be thankful that she plays for CN!! The bench has an immeasurable level of energy that overflows onto the court!!

In the second half Shaq fouls out and is clearly upset. I tell her to look up into the stands where she is receiving a well-deserved ovation and I tell her how proud I am of her!! The ovation continues….I am proud of ALL of our players!!!! The final buzzer sounds, the players celebrate, I go get a drink at the end of the bench. I can’t breathe…Parks has me in a bear hug. Bob Ward asks, “How does if feel?” I am numb and don’t know what to say. ‘D’ looks like my son on Christmas morning , Hoff gives me the usual fist-pound as if to say “just another win”. My daughter leaps into my arms as I go meet the BEST team in the Shore Conference at half court!! Crystal, Brooke and Monique remind me that I promised to let them dye my hair and do my nails if we won the SCT back in the summer…..NOW I AM NERVOUS!!!

From Eyes of a Player at the Shore Conference Finals — Lauren Clarke

Before the game against RBC, I was really nervous, but I was pretty confident that we would do well since we had really good games against other good teams to prepare us for this one. RBC obviously has a really good reputation and had been in that spot many times before, and this was only our first time, so knowing that they had more experience with this game definitely added to being nervous. But I was trying to look at it as just another game, to take some of the pressure off, and just play the way I always play. During the game, I felt like we were all playing one of our best games and we were all on with our shots. I thought if we kept playing the way we were, then we would definitely win. And I was also thinking our defense was really good and played a big part in why we won, even though Danella still had a great game offensively. After the game we were all really excited and it was one of the best feelings and we are really proud of ourselves for being the first team in school history to win the SCT, and are happy we can represent our school in such a good way.

Winning the Shore Conference Tournament was definitely a huge accomplishment for our team. It was one of our main goals from the beginning of the season, and to have finally done it gives us a really great feeling. It’s not something that every team gets to do, and to get to the finals for our first time ever and win it on the first try, is just an amazing feeling. All season our team has been making history, giving us so much more confidence going into games, and this win is just another huge confidence booster for us, especially heading into states. It added to a great season for us and it feels good to end on a note like this. I think our team will continue to makr history, and we are really looking forward to future seasons.

From the Eyes of a Player from the Shore Conference Finals — Brooke Hampton

Throughout the entire shore conference tournament, I have encountered many feelings some of which I never coped with before. Three days before we were about to play RBC, I was concerned about my ankle sprain I had the previous game. I was feeling a lot of pain and was afraid if I would not be healthy enough to perform in the championship. Aside from the pain I was focused on not letting my team down and doing whatever it takes to get my ankle healthy enough to play. I did not attend most of the first practice from doing rehab and icing in the trainer’s room and took off two days doing nothing but icing. During the time I was at the practice, I was joking around a little with my teammates to try and loosen them up. The next day, it was my first time practicing and running on my ankle with the brace on. It did not take that long to adjust to the brace so I was relieved by that. During this practice, my teammates, the coaches, and I were practicing hard but also making jokes and laughing to make us not think so much about the game. Coming into the game, I felt as if being in this position was not real at first. Once I stepped into the gym, I had many mixed emotions. My nerves were acting up, my adrenaline was pumping, I was extremely excited, and I was also determined to win. In the locker room I was visualizing myself making shots, making plays for my teammates, and just playing a great game overall. During warm-ups, I felt really loose at one point I was sort of dancing to the music and felt no stress at all. I never was this loose during a game or this mentally prepared before. That was when I knew I was going to play good simply because I was relaxed. During the game I felt pumped up and ready to attack the defense. I got some shots off in the beginning of the game to find my rhythm and then once I found mine, I started making plays for other people to get them the ball so they could find their rhythm as well. We shot really well in the beginning which built our confidence. I was focusing on the game so much that I forgot all about my ankle and just played to my ability. I also knew the place was going to be sold out so I just tuned out the crowd and did not let anything get to me. I was very confident going in the second half because we never let up and we answered back to their made shots to obtain our lead. We played with a lot of energy, intensity, and hardly got tired which caused us to not let up. Everyone contributed in a different way to make our team play phenomenal and that is the reason why we were successful in winning the SCT. After the game I was speechless and there were no words to describe the way I felt once that horn went off. I still cannot believe we won and I am sure my teammates feel the same. I felt so proud and honored especially because it was the first time ever in school history that Colts Neck was SCT Champs.

SCT Semi-Finals — What a night of Basketball

As a fan, when ever you go to a game you just want to sit through a game that is enjoyable. Whether you thought other Shore Conference Semi Final game was enjoyable because the final 2 minutes of the RBC - Vianney Game and a Triple Over Time ending for Colts Neck - Rumson made the evening worth the time.

In the first game of the night you had division rivals with a long history of playing each other with Red Ban Catholic vs St John Vianney. Since 1994 one of these two teams has won the Shore Conference Tournament in each year. This game was about who was the dominant program. It was about young team versus and experienced but injury riddled team. Even with RBC missing players out of their starting line-up due to injury they were still able to put 3 seniors on the court. While on the other side you had 1 senior, 1 junior and 3 Freshmen in the starting line up. There were times that there were 5 Freshmen on the floor for Vianney at one time. When all the smoke was cleared Red Bank Catholic found a way to come out on top and the experience paid off.

In the second game tonight you had Rumson who has the experience of playing on the big stage; winning consecutive state championships and makeing it to the finals of the SCT the previous two years. In addition they were out to avenge an earlier season loss to Colts Neck in the WOBM Finals. Then there is Colts Neck who 7 of their top 9 are sophomores with the other two players being seniors. By Colts Neck winning the game they make it to the SCT Finals for the first time in school history and probably send a message to alot of people that even though they are sophomores by age they will do not play like it.

What all boils down too is a Red Bank Catholic vs Colts Neck Shore Conference finals. Who will come out victorious when the game ends? Your guess is as good as mine, only time will tell. I look forward to another great night of basketball.

Monmouth University Coaches Clinic

Monmouth University invites all area AAU, Travel and Recreation, and school
Coaches to join them for a coaches basketball clinic on November 2nd at
the Boylan Gym!   It is the Monmouth Hawk Inaugural Basketball Clinic.
Pick up new drills and new ideas for your team with their comprehensive and
unique insiders perspective. Their is a minimal cost of $25 per coach, and
each coach may bring two players (8th grade or younger) of their choice. The players will be asked to
join a skills workout with other players of their aptitude.    This is an
amazing offer and will certainly help coaches of all levels lay out a plan
that works for young players in a professional method used by University Coaches

Monmouth University Women’s Basketball Presents Gaitley’s Gang

Monmouth University’s new Head Coach Stephanie Gaitley is pounding the pavement in Monmouth and Ocean County. She is looking to get the local community involved in her Women’s Basketball Program right here in Monmouth and Ocean County. Her focus is giving back to the community by offering various free and low cost clinics to coaches and players, her expectations . . . come out and support the college team in your area!! Monmouth University!

This is the most community minded push we have experienced from a local college coach and it is refreshing! Monmouth University wants local children to identify with the college. Coach Gaitley is willing to visit communities or have local community basketball programs visit Monmouth University for clinics and game instruction for minimal cost or free!

Coach Stephanie Gaitley (New Head Coach Women’s Basketball Team MU)

Coach Gaitley comes to Monmouth from Long Island University where she served as the head coach of the Blackbirds for the previous six seasons, accumulating a school record 95-82 at the helm of the program. Last season, she guided LIU to a school -record 24 wins and the top seed in the Northeast Conference tournament. In her time in Brooklyn, she led LIU to a pair of 20 win seasons, the first NEC Regular Season title in school history, the first WNIT bid in program history and was named the 2006-07 NEC Coach of the Year.

The Importance of Free Throws

I just had to get this off my chest, I was at a High School Shootout this weekend and so some very poor Free Throw Shooting, by player and by teams. Free Throw shooting is not something that is very difficult, it is a mind set. If you are on the floor there should be no reason why you can not shoot at least 75% on a consistent basis, but that does not happen. I saw people that were shooting 40% and 50%. Just because it did not cost you the game today does not mean that it will not cost you the game in the future.

Are you the one who is always getting fouled late in the game? If you are there is probably a reason for it, you are a bad Free Throw Shooter. If you are bad you probably call that shot a Foul Shot. I will steal a line from Washington Wizards Assistant Coach Dave Hopla “When you go to McDonalds you would much rather get free fries than foul fries.” So please stop shooting Foul Shots and starting shooting Free Throws.

Group 2 Championship= 800

Over 1100 wins (Jasper, Pascack Valley 799 and counting) on the court at the same time is a rarity in any sport, add a Group 2 state championship game it spells a classic. The game was everything you can ask for…two of the best teams in the state not only by record but in every sense of the word. Both programs have a rich and long history. The last time these two teams met was in 2005 also in the Group 2 Championship Game. Pascack Valley had come out on top in their last meeting, could the defending Group 2 champions (Rumson) find a way to a keep there title and avenge a loss from a few years ago?

Going in to the game you know both coaches had a specific game plan for their team. The one that would be able to execute their plan the best would win the game. There is only one problem with that concept; what happens when you execute the game plan but the other team does not miss a shot. At least, at times it seemed like Pascakc Valley could not miss miss, they would go on runs where they would hit 4 or 5 shots in a row. They would go on mini runs all games long and every time Rumson seemed to stop a run, Senior, Rebecca Lynch or one of the other talented players on PV would find a way to score and get another run started.

Lynch can just flat out play!!! Lynch does nothing spectacular but just finds a way to get the job done. I guess that is why she was named MVP for the game. Lynch is not the only one that plays that way, Coach Jasper has a team full of players that can just play basketball and it is a credit to what a great coach he is. People say that wins don’t always tell the story, but you don’t get 800 wins by accident, it happens for a reason. 800 wins happens when you are a great coach. I can only imagine what 800 wins feels like especially when you the State Championship in the same game.

I would like to end by saying Congratulations to Coach Jeff Jasper on this amazing accomplishment. Keep Pushing, and I look forward to seeing you win your 1000 game too.

Wow! So we won a state championship. It feels amazing; the win still hasn’t hit me. My team and I are having so much fun, and we just want our season to continue.
